NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Super:
120B Hybrid Mamba-Transformer MoE Redefining Agentic AI

By Mayur Dhavan — AI Automation & Development Engineer

At GTC 2026, NVIDIA dropped a model that might fundamentally change how we build multi-agent AI systems. NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Super is a 120-billion-parameter open model — but here is the twist: only 12 billion parameters are active during inference. Built on a revolutionary hybrid Mamba-Transformer Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, it delivers 5x higher throughput and up to 2x higher accuracy than its predecessor while handling a 1-million-token context window.

In this deep dive, I will break down the three architectural innovations that make Nemotron 3 Super unique — Latent MoE, Multi-Token Prediction, and the hybrid Mamba-Transformer design — explain why this matters for real-world agentic AI systems, and show you how to deploy it today.

The Two Problems Killing Agentic AI

Before diving into the architecture, let us understand the two constraints that Nemotron 3 Super was built to solve. As companies move beyond simple chatbots into multi-agent applications, they hit two walls:

Context Explosion

Multi-agent workflows generate up to 15x more tokens than standard chat. Each agent interaction requires resending full histories, tool outputs, and intermediate reasoning. Over long tasks, this volume increases costs and causes goal drift — where agents lose alignment with the original objective.

The Thinking Tax

Complex agents must reason at every step, but using large frontier models for every subtask makes multi-agent systems too expensive and sluggish for practical deployment. You need frontier-level intelligence at a fraction of the cost.

Nemotron 3 Super addresses both: a 1-million-token context window lets agents retain full workflow state in memory — preventing goal drift — while the MoE design keeps only 12B params active, making inference dramatically cheaper than a dense 120B model.

Architecture: Three Innovations in One Model

Nemotron 3 Super combines three major innovations into a single architecture that delivers breakthrough efficiency and accuracy:

Innovation #1
Hybrid Mamba-Transformer

Nemotron 3 Super interleaves Mamba-2 layers with Transformer attention layers and MoE layers. Mamba layers deliver 4x higher memory and compute efficiency for processing long sequences, while Transformer attention layers drive advanced reasoning where global context is critical. This hybrid design means the model gets the best of both worlds — Mamba's linear-time sequence processing for bulk context, and Transformer's proven reasoning capabilities for complex decision-making.

Innovation #2
Latent MoE

This is the real breakthrough. In standard MoE, tokens are routed to experts in their full dimension. In Latent MoE, tokens are first projected into a smaller latent dimension before expert routing and computation — improving accuracy per byte. The result: Nemotron 3 Super activates four expert specialists for the cost of one to generate each token. Only 12B of the 120B total parameters are active at inference, making this a dramatically more efficient architecture than dense models.

Innovation #3
Multi-Token Prediction

Instead of predicting one token at a time, Nemotron 3 Super predicts multiple future tokens simultaneously using shared-weight MTP layers. This enables native speculative decoding — the model drafts multiple tokens in a single forward pass, then verifies them. The result is 3x faster inference compared to standard autoregressive generation. The shared-weight design also improves training signal quality and supports more stable drafting at longer draft lengths.

Key Insight

These three innovations compound. The hybrid design reduces compute cost per token, Latent MoE reduces active parameters by 10x, and Multi-Token Prediction multiplies generation speed by 3x. Combined with NVFP4 precision on Blackwell (4x faster than FP8 on Hopper with no accuracy loss), Nemotron 3 Super achieves a total 5x throughput improvement over the previous Nemotron Super.

Training Pipeline: 25 Trillion Tokens & Multi-Env RL

The training methodology behind Nemotron 3 Super is as impressive as the architecture. NVIDIA used a three-stage pipeline to produce the final model:

1

Pre-Training — 25T+ Tokens

Pre-trained on over 25 trillion tokens of crawled and synthetic data spanning code, math, science, and general knowledge across 20 languages and 43 programming languages. This is the first model in the Nemotron 3 family trained at NVFP4 precision — the majority of linear layers use NVFP4 for weights, activations, and gradients, while select critical layers are maintained in BF16 or MXFP8 for stability. Trained using Megatron-LM.

2

Supervised Fine-Tuning

Fine-tuned on synthetic code, math, science, tool calling, instruction following, structured outputs, and general knowledge data. This stage incorporated data designed for long-range retrieval and multi-document aggregation — critical capabilities for agentic workflows. Synthetic data was generated by distilling trajectories from frontier reasoning models, aggressively filtered for quality.

3

Multi-Environment Reinforcement Learning

The secret weapon. NVIDIA used asynchronous GRPO (Group Relative Policy Optimization) across 15 training environments spanning math, code, science, instruction following, multi-step tool use, multi-turn conversations, and structured outputs. The asynchronous RL architecture fully decouples training from inference across separate GPU devices. Final conversational quality was further refined through RLHF.

Open Everything

NVIDIA is publishing the complete methodology: 10+ trillion tokens of pre- and post-training datasets, 15 RL environments (via NeMo Gym), and evaluation recipes. This is not just a model drop — it is the entire playbook for building state-of-the-art agentic AI. Everything is available via the NVIDIA Nemotron Developer Repository.

Final Thoughts

NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Super is not just another large language model — it is a statement about where agentic AI is heading. The combination of Mamba-2 for efficient sequence processing, Latent MoE for radical parameter efficiency, and Multi-Token Prediction for generation speed creates an architecture purpose-built for the multi-agent future.

What excites me the most is the radical openness. NVIDIA did not just release weights — they released the entire training recipe: 25T+ tokens of pre-training data, post-training datasets, 15 RL environments, and evaluation tools. This sets a new standard for what “open” means in AI.

If you are building multi-agent systems, RAG pipelines, coding assistants, or any application that needs to reason across large contexts at scale — Nemotron 3 Super should be at the top of your evaluation list. The era of efficient, open agentic AI is here.
